Farnborough Aerodrome (EGLF) Farnborough holds a unique place in British aviation. Its history is closely linked to the development of the aircraft industry as the site of a government-owned aircraft factory in the first world war, then as a research establishment and today as the location of the biennial international air show. The Ministry of Defence declared Farnborough surplus to requirements in 1992. It has now received planning permission to develop into a business and executive aviation centre. But despite the changes the Society of British Aerospace Companies, which promotes the air show, has announced its intention of keeping it at Farnborough indefinitely. The show represents a major challenge to NATS controllers who are responsible for coordinating all the movements into and out of the airfield as well as the flying display itself. TAG Farnborough Airport Ltd. operates Farnborough Airport (which it leases from the U.K. Ministry of Defence), located in Hampshire, thirty-five miles south east of London. Farnborough Aerodrome is a CAA certified, full IFR, commercially qualified airport for the exclusive use of business jet aircraft.   Over the past, TAG has invested to preserve Farnborough's past while securing its future as Europe's premier all-business airport. Improvements have included a resurfaced runway, installation of ILS/DME, all new signage and lighting, and many other infrastructure improvements designed to increase safety and protect the environment. Farnborough now offers a complete range of aviation services to based and transient business aircraft, including passenger services, aircraft handling, fuelling, hangarage and maintenance. Farnborough's new look is taking shape in the form of new buildings, a modern, architecturally significant Air Traffic Control Tower that consists of the Visual Control Room, Radar Room, Equipment Room and TAG Management Offices. The new "wave" design triple hangar, 120,000 sq ft of aircraft hangarage divided into three Bays with office accommodation. Another similar hanger has got planning permission. The culmination of TAG's efforts occurred in May 2006 when Farnborough's stunning new Executive Terminal was opened officially by HRH The Duke of York, Prince Andrew. The £10.2 million, 54,000 sq ft facility will serve as the operational and administrative offices of TAG Farnborough, and will provide ground services for business aircraft. The terminal features a café and conference facilities for passengers and pilots, all to the highest standards of comfort, quality and excellence. The Executive Terminal is the third in the family of buildings designed and constructed by Reid Architecture, creating a unified business aviation "campus."  As part of TAG’s long term development plans, it joins the Air Traffic Control Tower and Hangars to create the most modern airport dedicated to business aviation in Europe. Farnborough Airport is a designated site of nature conservation interest. All of TAG’s current and planned redevelopment has been done in conjunction with English Nature, Britain's conservation organization, in order to protect native vegetation and wildlife.
